  • Err (verb) – ग़लती होना
    Meaning –Be mistaken or incorrect
    Synonyms – guilty, culpable, misbehaving, delinquent, lawless, lawbreaking, criminal
    Sentence – The judge had erred in ruling that the evidence was inadmissible.
  • Privilege (verb) – विशेषाधिकार
    Meaning – Exempt (someone) from a liability or obligation to which others are subject.
    Synonyms – grant a right/advantage, give an advantage/benefit.
    Sentence – The law does not privilege the interests of men above those of women.
  • Old guard (noun) – किसी समूह या पार्टी के मूल सदस्य
    Meaning – old member of an organisation.
    Sentence – When you were justice minister, you met resistance from the old guard.
  • Mould (noun) – ढालना, आकार
    Meaning – A hollow container used to give shape to molten or hot liquid material when it cools and hardens.
    Synonyms – pattern, format, model/structure.

  • Opaque (adjective) – अपारदर्शी, अस्पष्ट
    Meaning – Not able to be seen through; not transparent.
    Synonyms – non-transparent, unclear, mysterious/doubtful.
    Sentence – The windows were opaque with steam.
  • Precede (verb) – पूर्व में होना
    Meaning – Come before (something) in time.
    Synonyms – go before, go in advance of, lead up to, lead to, pave the way for
    Sentence – A gun battle had preceded the explosions.

 

  • Unanimously (adverb) – सर्वसम्मति से
    Meaning – without opposition, agreed to by everyone involved.
    Synonyms – with one accord, with one mind, to a man, as one, one and all, each and every one, bar none
    Sentence – We may have some problems but they must be tackled unanimously as one nation.
  • Detractor (noun) – आलोचक
    Meaning – A person who disparages someone or something.
    Synonyms – critic, fault-finder, censurer.
    Sentence – In the print world, it’s safe to say, making sure that one’s detractors are heard is much rarer.
  • Spearhead (noun) – नेता
    Meaning – An individual or group chosen to lead an attack or movement.
    Synonyms – forefront, leaders, driving force.
    Sentence – He became the spearhead of a health education program.
  • Dynamism (noun) – गतिशीलता
    Meaning – The quality of being characterized by vigorous activity and progress.
    Synonyms – strength, powerfulness, potency/efficacy.
    Sentence – The dynamism and strength of the economy.
  • Call for (phrasal verb)
    Meaning  require, make necessary, demand.
  • Sober (adjective) – शांत
    Meaning – Not affected by alcohol; not drunk.
    Synonyms – sensible/thoughtful; logical, realistic.
    Sentence – I didn’t even care that I had to stay sober to drive.
  • At the helm (phrase) 
    Meaning – in charge, in command/control/authority; in the driving seat. 
  • Reorientation (noun) – पुनरभिविन्यास
    Meaning – the act of changing the focus/direction.
    Sentence – The only solution is the reorientation of our defense policy.
  • Grassroots (plural noun) – साधारण जन समुदाय
    Meaning – the most basic level of an organisation.
    Sentence – The whole campaign would be conducted at the grass roots.
  • Decentralise (verb) – विकेन्द्रित करना
    Meaning – Transfer (authority) from central to local government.
    Sentence – It will centralise rather than decentralise power.
  • Feeble (adjective)
    Meaning – Failing to convince or impress.
    Synonyms – ineffective, unsatisfactory, unconvincing/weak.

  • Euphemism (noun) – व्यंजना
    Meaning – Polite/indirect term; a mild or pleasant word or phrase that is used instead of one that is unpleasant or offensive.
    Synonyms – substitute, mild alternative, indirect term, understatement
    Sentence – I don’t like euphemisms or euphemistic language.
