The disaster that struck a coal mine at Ksan in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills district on December 13, trapping at least 13 workers, is a shocking reminder that a fast-growing economy such as India continues to allow Dickensian mining practices.

  • Lapse (noun)– चूक, भूल
    Meaning – A brief or temporary failure of concentration, memory, or judgement.

  • Desperate (adjective) – बेकरार
    Meaning – Feeling or showing a hopeless sense that a situation is so bad as to be impossible to deal with.
    Synonyms – hopeless, distressed/disheartened; hungry.
    Sentence – The school appears without life – a place where one feels a desperate sense of loss.
  • Remunerative (adjective) – पारिश्रमिक-संबंधी
    Meaning – Financially rewarding; lucrative.

  • In spite of (phrase)
    Meaning – despite, notwithstanding, regardless of.
  • Shortcomings (noun) – कमियों
    Meaning – A fault or failure to meet a certain standard, typically in a person’s character, a plan, or a system.
    Synonyms – fault, flaw, imperfection/defect.
    Sentence – He is frank about what he sees as the shortcomings of his great predecessors.
  • Landslip (noun) 
    Meaning – another name for landslide, mudslide, earthfall.
    Sentence – In those days, after heavy rain, there were landslips.
  • Rigour (noun) कठोरता
    Meaning – The quality of being extremely thorough and careful.
    Synonyms – strictness, precision/accuracy, attention to detail.
    Sentence – his analysis is lacking in rigour.
  • Extraction (noun) – निष्कर्षण
    Meaning – The action of extracting something, especially using effort or force.
    Synonyms – removal/taking out, separation, obtaining, distillation.
    Sentence – This I learnt doing thousands of venom extractions.
  • Glare (noun) चमक
    Meaning – A fierce or angry stare.
    Synonyms – public attention/interest, media attention.
    Sentence – Both sides were throwing glares and looks of contempt.
  • Remiss (adjective) – बेपरवाह
    Meaning – Lacking care or attention to duty.
    Synonyms – negligent, careless, irresponsible.
    Sentence – The council itself was remiss in not having had the building listed.
