प्रकृति ने मानव जीवन को बहुत सरल बनाया है, किन्तु आज का मानव अपने जीवन-काल में ही पूरी दुनिया की सुख-समृद्धि बटोर लेने के प्रयास में उसको जटिल बनाता जा रहा है। इस जटिलता के कारण संसार में धनी-निर्धन, सत्ताधीश-सत्ताच्युत, संतानवाननिस्संतान सभी सुख-शान्ति की चाह तो रखते हैं, किन्तु राह पकड़ते हैं आह भरने की, मरु-मरीचिका के मैदान में जल की, धधकती आग में शीतलता की चाह रखते हैं । विद्वानों का विचार है कि संसार में सुख का मार्ग है – आत्मसंयम । किन्तु मानव इस मार्ग को भूलकर सांसारिक पदार्थों में, इन्द्रिय विषयों की प्राप्ति में आनन्द्र ढूँढ़ रहा है। परिणामतः दुःख के सागर में डूबता जा रहा है । आत्मसंयम का मार्ग अपने में बहुत स्पष्ट है, उसकी उपादेयता किसी भी काल में कम नहीं होती । इन्द्रिय विषयों का संयम ही आत्मसंयम है । भौतिक पदार्थों के प्रति इन्द्रियों का प्रबल आकर्षण मानवीय दुःखों का मूल कारण माना गया है । उपभोक्तावादी संस्कृति के फैलाव से यह आकर्षण लीन से तीव्रतर होता जा रहा है । पर ऐसी स्थिति में याद रखना आवश्यक है कि ये भौतिक पदार्थ सुख तो दे सकते हैं, आनन्द नहीं । आनन्द का निर्झर तो आत्मसंयम से फूटता है । उसकी मिठास अनिर्वचनीय और अनुपम होती है । इस मिठास के सम्मुख धन-संपत्ति, सत्ता, सौंदर्य का सुख, सागर के खारे पानी जैसा लगने लगता है।
