1. What made Ray think the visitor was not really a shopper?
Answer – Ray’s rich experience told him that the visitor was not a shopper. One man stood at the door and the other man, with no sign of friendliness in his eyes, came towards him.
 
2. Why do you think he had come to the shop?
Answer – I think he had come to the shop to rob the shop. He was in urgent need of money.
 
3. How did Ray communicate with him?
Answer – Ray was deaf and communicated with his customers by writing messages on a notepad. His customers also write their replies on the notepad.
 
4. What do you think the man said to his friend who waited at the door?
Answer – The man would have said to his friend who waited at the door that the shop owner was deaf.
 
5. Ray was not a pawnbroker. Why then did he lend money to people in exchange for their old watches and clocks?
Answer – Ray was not a pawnbroker but seems like a decent human being. He chose not to say no to a person in need and gave them loans in exchange of their old clocks and watches. These were returned back to the owners once the money was paid back. He did not charge any interest on the money either.
 
6. “The watch was nothing special and yet had great powers.” In what sense did it have ‘great powers’?
Answer – “The watch was nothing special and yet had great powers.” because it can be exchanged for money and pull out a person from bad situation. Also, it saved Mr. Ray from getting any physical injury and robbery.
 
7. Do you think the man would ever come back to pick up the watch?
Answer – No, the older man would never come back to pick up his watch because he got a price much higher than the cost of the watch.
 
8. When did “the unfriendly face” of the visitor turn truly friendly?
Answer – The unfriendly face of the visitor turned truly friendly, when he got a fifty-dollar note for his ordinary watch. He was happy.
