1. In what way is Iswaran an asset to Mahendra?
Answer – Iswaran is an asset to Mahendra. He cooks for him, washes his clothes and chats away with him at night. He takes care of all needs of Mahendra. He entertains Mahendra by his stories as well.

2. How does Iswaran describe the uprooted tree on the highway? What effect does he want to create in his listeners?
Answer – Iswaran describes the uprooted tree as an enormous bushy beast lying sprawled across the road. He is influenced by Tamil stories full of suspense. He loves creating suspense before telling anything. His. stories are so lovely that they leave a long lasting impact on the listeners’ mind.

3. How does he narrate the story of the tusker? Does it appear to be plausible?
Answer –  One day, Ishwaran narrated an anecdote involving an elephant. He narrated the Tusker’s escape from the timber yard in such excitement that he jumped and stamped his feet in emulation of the mad elephant. He told that the elephant reached the outskirts of the town and broke down fences, smashed various stalls, entered a school ground and smashed the football goal post and created a mess all around.
Nothing can be said for certain about the plausibility of the incident.

4. Why does the author say that Iswaran seemed to more than make up for the absence of a TV in Mahendra’s living quarters?
Answer – Ishwaran chatted away with Mahendra at night. He had the skill of narrating stories and anecdotes with such realism ad suspense that Mahendra enjoyed listening to whatever he narrated. He told stories packed with adventure, horror and suspense. This skill made the author compare Ishwaran with a TV.

5. Mahendra calls ghosts or spirits a figment of the imagination. What happens to him on a full-moon night?
Answer – Mahendra calls ghosts or spirits a figment of the imagination. He is a rational thinker. But the story of Iswaran leaves a mark on his mind. On a full-moon night, he hears a low cry and sees a dark, cloudy form which matches Iswaran’s description. He is terrified and falls back on the pillow, panting.

6. Can you think of some other ending for the story?
Answer – The story could end in a scene in which Mahendra would come to know that it was none other than Ishwaran who had tried to scare Mahendra that night by making all those noises.

Answer – Yes, Iswaran is a fascinating storyteller. He has mastered the art of storytelling. He builds up the required amount of suspense and thrills his listeners.

  • Understanding of gestures to be used
  • Understanding of facial expressions to be used
  • Good imagination and creativity
  • In-depth understanding of tone and pitch to be used
  • Decent acting skills so as to keep listeners engaged
