1. What did Hafeez Contractor have nightmares about?
Answer – Hafeez Contractor had nightmares about appearing for a mathematics test without knowing anything about the subject.

2. What did the Principal say to him, which influenced him deeply?
Answer – The Principal said to Hafeez Contractor that he had been watching him from day one. He was a good student but he never studied. The Principal had taken care of him till than. But now he advised him to take care of himself.  

3. “… that year I did not step out onto the field.” What was he busy doing that year?
Answer – That vear Hafeez Contractor remained extremely busy in prayers, eating and studying. That is why he did not step out on to the field to play. It was due to the inspiring words of his Principal, who advised him to study.

4. (i) What “distraction” did Hafeez Contractor create one day?
Answer – Hafeez Contractor created a distraction like the play of chor police one day.

(ii) Would you have liked to participate in the “distraction” had you been with him?
Answer – Yes, I would have liked this distraction.

1. Hafeez Contractor wanted to join the police force. Why didn’t he?
Answer –  Hafeez wanted to join the police force, but his mother advised him to do his graduation first. So he joined Jaihind College in Mumbai.

2. In the architect’s office, Hafeez Contractor was advised to drop everything and join architecture. Why?
Answer – One day while sitting in architecture’s office Hafeez Contractor found a man drawing a window detail. He told the man that the window he had drawn would not open. It was his keen observation and sharp instinct that made him say so. His brother-in-law immediately advised him to drop everything and join architecture.  

3. (i) What was Mrs Gupta’s advice to Hafeez Contractor?
Answer – When he was in the second or third standard, one of his teachers Mrs Gupta saw his sketches and advised him to become an architect when he grew up.

(ii) What made her advise him so?
Answer – The sketches made by Hafeez Contractor made her advise him so.

4. How did he help fellow students who had lost a button?
Answer – When students lost a button Hafeez Contractor used to cut a button from chalk using a blade. Thus, he helped fellow students.

5. Which rules did he break as a schoolboy?
Answer – As a school boy he broke many rules. He never paid attention to studies. He always passed Ms exams, by copying.

6. (i) What is Hafeez Contractor’s definition of mathematics?
Answer – For Hafeez Contractor putting design construction, psychology and sociology together and making a sketch from all that is mathematics.

(ii) How would you want to define mathematics? Do you like the subject?
Answer – I would like to define mathematics as a subject which sharpens our mind and develop concentration. Yes, I like mathematics.

Answer the following questions.

1. It is likely that someone who is original and intelligent does not do very well at school. Should such a learner be called a failure? If not, why not?
Answer – It is likely that someone who is original and intelligent does not do very well at school. Such a learner should not be called a failure as everyone has his or her own strengths and weaknesses. Those who are academically brilliant do well in other fields. Hafeez Contractor was not a very good student. However, he had the talent for construction, and he is now one of the leading architects. Each individual has his or her own individual talents, which may or may not be visible in the academic report. That is why students should be encouraged to showcase their talents, and work on them. They should not be called failures.

2. Who, in your view, is an ‘unusual’ learner?
Answer – An unusual learner can be a genius in any subject. He will be different from the rest.

3. What can schools do to draw out the best in unusual learners? Suggest whatever seems reasonable to you.
Answer – School should stop treating all the learners as ordinary. They should not follow old mechanical methods of teaching. They should try to discover the hidden talent in each learner and encourage him to do his best to develop it.
