4. What are the important architectural features of the temples of Bengal?
Answer – Architectural features of the temples of Bengal:

  • Double roofed or dochala, four roofed (chauchala).
  • Comparative more complex-four roofed structures-four triangular roofs placed on four walls moved up to coverage on curved line or a point.
  • Built on a square platform.
  • Interior plain.
  • Outer walls decorated with paintings, ornamental tiles or terracotta tablets.

5. Why did minstrels proclaim the achievements of heroes?
Answer – Minstrels used to recite poems and songs which depicted the stories of the ” Rajputs’ heroic deeds. By reciting such poems and songs these minstrels inspired others to follow the examples of Rajputs. Ordinary people were also attracted by these stories.

6. Why do we know much more about the cultural practices of rulers than about those of ordinary people?
Answer – We know more about the cultural practices of rulers than about those of ordinary people because only rulers could afford historians for the purpose of documentation.

7. Why did conquerors try to control the temple of Jagannatha at Puri?
Answer – Conquers tried to gain control over the Jagannatha temple at Puri because it would make their rule acceptable to the local people since the temple was important as a place of pilgrimage and was a center of authority in social and political matters.

8. Why were temples built in Bengal?
Answer – Temples were built in Bengal because of the following reasons:

  • Increase in religious faith.
  • Mosques had already been built.
  • Powerful people wanted to demonstrate their power and proclaim their piety.
  • ‘Low’ people also participated in the temple building.
  • New economic opportunities to people also helped in temple setting up.
  • Support of Brahmanas to get idols placed in temples from huts.

9. Describe the most important features of the culture of your region, focussing on buildings, performing arts, and painting.
Answer – Most Important features of our culture and our region:

  • Hindu culture
  • Worship of gods and goddesses.
  • Celebrations of numerous festivals the year-round.
  • Huge temples.
  • Bhajans and Kirtans.
  • Paintings of gods and goddesses.

10. Do you use different languages for (a) speaking, (b) reading, (c) writing? Find out about one major composition in language that you use and discuss why you find it interesting.
Answer –
(a) Speaking: Khadi Boli
(b) Reading: Hindi and English.
(c) Writing: Hindi and English.
Thus, I use different languages for speaking, reading and writing.

11. Choose one state each from north, west, south, east and central India. For each of these, prepare a list of foods that are commonly consumed, highlighting any differences and similarities that you notice.
Answer –
North –
Punjab. The main food here includes makki ki roti, sarson da saag, dal chapati and rajma chawal. Chicken and meat is also consumed in large quantities over here. People also have lassi and the emphasis is more on milk and milk products.
West – Rajasthan. Here, the main food includes dal churma, mama kachori and dalia.
South – Kerala. The main cuisine of the state includes dosa, idli, uttapam, idli sambar and fish rice.
East – West Bengal. The staple diet of the state is fish and rice. People also like to consume many types of sweet in this state. Non vegetarian dishes are also consumed a lot over here.
Central – Madhya Pradesh. The main food over here is dal chawal and dal roti.
Similarity – We can see here that the food of east and south India resemble a lot in the sense that both of them like to have fish and rice. We can also see that the food choice is quite similar in western and central India.
Difference – While north and western India likes to have more of vegetable based items, the east and southern India likes to have non-vegetarian dishes. the food choice of central India is simple and plain whereas the rest of India has a definite type of choice.

12. Choose another set of five states from each these regions and prepare a list of clothes that are generally worn by women and men in each. Discuss your findings.
Answer –
Tamil Nadu – Veshti for men and Kanjeevaram sarees for women

Bengal – Dhoti for men and Bengali jamdani sarees for women
Uttar Pradesh – Lucknowi and chikankari based kurtas and sarees
Kerala – Veshti for men and Kasavu saree for women
Assam – They use brightly made shawls known as Mekhla’s that are draped like sarees.
