(i) What is an ecosystem?
Answer – The interaction or interdependence of plant, animal and human beings with their immediate environment/surroundings is called as ecosystem.

(ii) What do you mean by natural environment?
Answer – The environment that consists of the elements created by nature is called the natural environment. The natural environment comprises land, water, air, plants, and animals.

(iii) Which are the major components of the environment?
Answer – The major components of environment are natural environment – 

  • Natural Components (Air, Water, Land & Living things)
  • Human Made Components (components created by human beings)
  • Human Components (human populations)

(iv) Give four examples of a human-made environment.
Answer – Human-made environment are those that include everything that is made by man or humans. Examples :- Parks, buildings, roads and industries.

(v) What is lithosphere?
Answer – The lithosphere is the solid crust or the hard top layer of the earth. It is made up of rocks and minerals and covered by a thin layer of soil. It is an irregular surface with various landforms such as mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys, etc.

(vi) Which are the two major components of the biotic environment?
Answer – Plants and animals are the two major components of the biotic environment.

(vii) What is biosphere?
Answer – The biosphere is a narrow zone of the earth where land, water, and air interact with each other to support life. Thus, plant and animal kingdom together make biosphere, ie., the living world.

4. Give reasons.
(i) Man modifies his environment
Answer – Modification of environments means altering or changing the immediate surroundings. As the population is growing, human needs and desires are also growing. To fulfil the needs, humans or man modifies the environment in many ways. For example, trees are cut to make buildings or commercial places. Animals are killed for their skin and tusks.

(ii) Plants and animals depend on each other
Answer – Plants and animals are interdependent on each other, because plants are the producers and animals are the consumers. Plants release oxygen in the atmosphere, which is inhaled by human beings and humans exhale carbon dioxide, which helps plants in producing their own food.
