1. The enclosure in which Kari lived had a thatched roof that lay on thick tree stumps. Examine the illustration of Kari’s pavilion on page 8 and say why it was built that way.
Answer – The enclosure was so built as to make it suitable for Kari. Kari bumped against the poles as he moved about. Since these poles were thick tree stumps, they did not give way.

2. Did Kari enjoy his morning bath in the river? Give a reason for your answer.
Answer – Yes, Kari used to enjoy his morning bath in the river. He would lie down on the sand and the author would rub his back with clean sand for an hour. Post that, he would stay in the water for a long time.

3. Finding good twigs for Kari took a long time. Why?
Answer – The narrator had to work hard to gather soft new twigs for Kari. He had to climb all kinds of trees. If the twigs were deformed, Kari refused to eat them.

4. Why did Kari push his friend into the stream?
Answer – Kari pushed his friend, the narrator into the stream because there was a boy lying flat at the bottom of the river and he wanted him to save the drowning boy.

5. Kari was like a baby. What are the main points of comparison?
Answer – Kari was like a baby as it had to be trained to be good and if it was not told when it was naughty, it was up to more mischief than ever.

6. Kari helped himself to all the bananas in the house without anyone noticing it. How did he do it?
Answer – Kari helped himself to all the bananas in the house without anyone noticing it. He did so with the help of his long trunk. He would steal the bananas kept on the dining table through the window.

7. Kari learnt the commands to sit and to walk. What were the instructions for each command?
Answer – Kari learnt the commands to sit and to walk. The word “Dhat” was used to make him sit. The word used to make him walk was “Mali”.

8. What is “the master call”? Why is it the most important signal for an elephant to learn?
Answer – The “master call” refers to a strange hissing and howling sound which seems as if a snake and a tiger are fighting. It is considered as the most important signal for an elephant to learn because if the elephant’s master was in any trouble, he would give a master call and the elephant would come to his master to help him out of the trouble.
