4. What were the problems that Ashoka wanted to solve by introducing dhamma?
Answer – Ashoka wanted to solve the following problems by introducing dhamma:
1. Inter-religious conflicts between the people of his kingdom.
2. Animal sacrifice practiced in the name of religious rituals.
3. Ill-treatment of slaves and servants.
4. Constant disputes and quarrels in families and amongst neighbours.
5. What were the means adopted by Ashoka to spread the message of dhamma?
Answer – Ashoka adopted several measures to spread his dhamma. Some of them are:
1. He himself set an example before his people by strictly following Ahimsa.
2. He appointed some; officers known as Dharam Mahamatras to spread and explain the message of dhamma.
3. He engraved the principles of dhamma on rocks and pillars.
4. He written his message in Prakrit language.
6. Why do you think slaves and servants were ill-treated? Do you think the orders of the emperor would have improved their condition? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer – Yes, we think that the slaves-and the servants were ill-treated in the society because they have no political rights. The orders of the emperor could have made the slaves free. If the servants were ill-treated then the master could be punished.
