(a) What are the major landforms?

Answer – The major landforms are: mountains, plateaus and plains.

(b) What is the difference between a mountain and a plateau?

Answer – 

The difference between a mountain and a plateau is given below:

Mountain Plateau
A mountain is any natural elevation of the earth surface. A plateau is an elevated flat land.
It is considerably higher than the surrounding area. It is a flat-topped table land, standing above the surrounding area.

(c) What are the different types of mountains?

Answer – The different types of mountains are: Fold Mountains, Block Mountains and Volcanic Mountains.

(d) How are mountains useful to man?

Answer – Mountains are useful to man in various ways:
1. They are a storehouse of water.
2. Water from the mountains is also used for irrigation and generation of hydro-electricity.
3. The river valleys and terraces are ideal for the cultivation of crops.
4. Mountains have a rich variety of flora and fauna.
5. Several sports like paragliding, hang gliding, river rafting and skiing are popular in the mountains.

(e) How are plains formed?

Answer – Plains are generally formed by rivers and their tributaries. The rivers flow down the slopes of mountains and erode them. They carry forward the eroded material. Then they deposit their load consisting of stones, sand and silt along their courses and in their valleys. It is from these deposits that plains are formed.

(f) Why are the river plains thickly populated?

Answer – The river plains are very suitable for human habitation. People get flat land for building houses and for cultivation. The soil of river plains is very fertile. Hence people live here and cultivate land for their living.

(g) Why are mountains thinly populated?

Answer – Mountains have very harsh cold climate. The slopes of the mountains are very steep. Also, mountains offer very little land for farming. For these reasons, mountains are thinly populated.
