हमारे बाल्यकाल के संस्कार ही जीवन का ध्येय निर्धारित करते हैं, अतः यदि शैशव में हमारी संतान ऐसे व्यक्तियों की छाया में ज्ञान प्राप्त करेगी, जिनमें चरित्र तथा सिद्धांत की विशेषता नहीं है. जिनमें संस्कारजनित अनेक दोष हैं, तो फिर उनके चरित्र पर भी उसी की छाप पड़ेगी और भविष्य में उनके ध्येय भी उसी के अनुसार स्वार्थमय तथा अस्थिर होंगे। शिक्षा एक ऐसा कर्तव्य नहीं है जो किसी पुस्तक को प्रथम पृष्ठ से अंतिम पृष्ठ तक पढ़ाने से ही पूर्ण हो जाता हो, वरन् वह ऐसा कर्तव्य है जिसकी परिधि सारे जीवन को घेरे हुए है और पुस्तकें ऐसे साँचे हैं जिनमें ढालकर उसे सुडौल बनाया जा सकता है।

आत्मनिर्भरता का अर्थ है अपने ऊपर निर्भर रहना । जो व्यक्ति दूसरे के मुँह को नहीं ताकते वे ही आत्मनिर्भर होते हैं। वस्तुतः आत्मविश्वास के बल पर कार्य करते रहना आत्मनिर्भरता है। आत्मनिर्भरता का अर्थ है – समाज, निज तथा राष्ट्र की आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति करना । व्यक्ति, समाज तथा राष्ट्र में आत्मविश्वास की भावना, आत्मनिर्भरता का प्रतीक है । (स्वावलंबन जीवन की सफलता की पहली सीढ़ी है ) सफलता प्राप्त करने के लिए व्यक्ति को स्वावलंबी अवश्य होना चाहिए । स्वावलंबन व्यक्ति, समाज और राष्ट्र के जीवन में सर्वांगीण सफलता प्राप्ति का महामंत्र है । स्वावलंबन जीवन का अमूल्य आभूषण है, वीरों तथा कर्मयोगियों का इष्टदेव है। सर्वांगीण उन्नति का आधार है।

जब व्यक्ति स्वावलंबी होगा, उसमें आत्मनिर्भरता होगी, तो ऐसा कोई कार्य नहीं जिसे वह न कर सके । स्वावलंबी मनुष्य के सामने कोई भी कार्य आ जाए, वह अपने दृढ़ विश्वास से, अपने आत्मबल से उसे अवश्य ही पूर्ण कर लेगा। स्वावलंबी मनुष्य जीवन में कभी भी असफलता का मुँह नहीं देखता । वह जीवन के हर क्षेत्र में निरंतर कामयाब होता जाता है। सफलता तो स्वावलंबी मनुष्य की दासी बनकर रहती है। जिस व्यक्ति का स्वयं अपने आप पर ही विश्वास नहीं, वह भला क्या कर पाएगा ? परंतु इसके विपरीत जिस व्यक्ति में आत्मनिर्भरता होगी, वह कभी किसी के सामने नहीं झुकेगा । वह जो करेगा सोच समझकर धैर्य से करेगा। मनुष्य में सबसे बड़ी कमी स्वावलंबन का न होना है। सबसे बड़ा गुण भी मनुष्य की आत्मनिर्भरता ही है ।

मृत्युंजय और संघमित्र की मित्रता पाटलिपुत्र के जन-जन की जानी बात थी । मृत्युंजय जन-जन द्वारा ‘धन्वंतरि’ की उपाधि से विभूषित वैद्य थे और संघमित्र समस्त उपाधियों से विमुक्त ‘भिक्षु’ । मृत्युंजय चरक और सुश्रुत को समर्पित थे, तो संघमित्र बुद्ध के संघ और धर्म को । प्रथम का जीवन की संपन्नता और दीर्घायुष्य में विश्वास था तो द्वितीय का जीवन के निराकरण और निर्वाण में । दोनों ही दो विपरीत तटों के समान थे, फिर भी उनके मध्य बहने वाली स्नेह-सरिता उन्हें अभिन्न बनाए रखती थी। यह आश्चर्य है, जीवन के उपासक वैद्यराज को उस निर्वाण के लोभी के बिना चैन ही नहीं था, पर यह परम आश्चर्य था कि समस्त रोगों को मलों की तरह त्यागने में विश्वास रखने वाला भिक्षु भी वैद्यराज के मोह में फँस अपने निर्वाण को कठिन से कठिनतर बना रहा था। वैद्यराज अपनी वार्ता में संघमित्र से कहते – निर्वाण (मोक्ष) का अर्थ है – (आत्मा का मृत्यु पर विजय )। संघमित्र हँसकर कहते – देह द्वारा मृत्यु पर विजय मोक्ष नहीं है। देह तो अपने आप में व्याधि है ।

तुम देह की व्याधियों को दूर करके कष्टों से छुटकारा नहीं दिलाते, बल्कि कष्टों के लिए अधिक सुयोग जुटाते हो । देह व्याधि से मुक्ति तो भगवान की शरण में है)। वैद्यराज ने कहा- मैं तो देह को भगवान के समीप जीते ही बने रहने का माध्यम मानता हूँ । पर दृष्टियों का यह विरोध उनकी मित्रता के मार्ग में कभी बाधक नहीं हुआ। दोनों अपने कोमल हास और मोहक स्वर से अपने-अपने विचारों को प्रस्तुत करते रहते ।

पुराने समय में जो लोग देश की सेवा करना चाहते थे, वे राजनीति में आते थे। वे अपने भविष्य की चिंता कर देश की निःस्वार्थ सेवा में लग जाते थे। आजादी लड़ाई के समय तक लोगों के अंदर सच्चा देश प्रेम था। दत से लोगों ने आज़ादी के आंदोलन में जुड़कर सरकारी बकरी तक छोड़ दी थी, परिवार का सुख त्याग दिया था यहाँ तक कि अपने प्राणों का मोह तक छोड़ दिया कितने ही सच्चे देशभक्त इस आज़ादी की नींव में समा और इतिहास में इनका नाम तक नहीं है । आज भी हमारे देश में अनगिनत नेता हैं जो अलग-अलग पार्टी के साथ जुड़े हुए हैं । आवश्यकता पड़ने पर ये लोग तुरंत पार्टी बदलकर दूसरी पार्टी में चले जाते हैं। नेतागिरी का लोभ नि:संदेह मनुष्य को. पतित बनाता जा रहा है। सारा देश नेतृत्व की अभिलाषा का शिकार होता जा रहा है। भाषण, गर्जन, तिकड़म और छल के झूठे वायदों और धोखे की कसमों से सारा सार्वजनिक वातावरण कोलाहलपूर्ण हो गया है। जहाँ देखो वहीं नेताजी नजर आएंगे। लगता यह है कि समाज का प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अब नेता बनना चाहता है, भले ही उसका कोई अनुगमन करने वाला न हो। देश की सारी सुविधाओं का उपयोग करते हुए ये अपने आप को किसी राजा-महाराजा से कम नहीं समझते। विदेश जाकर महँगा इलाज़ कराते हैं। सत्ता में आने के लिए लम्बे-लम्बे भाषण दिए जाते हैं, गर्जना की जाती है, तिकड़म और छल के झूठे वायदे और धोखे की कसमें खाई जाती हैं, दूसरी पार्टियों पर कीचड़ उछाला जाता है। येन-केन प्रकारेण साम, दाम, दंड और भेद नीतियों का प्रयोग करके अपने गंतव्य तक पहुंच जाते हैं। ऐसे राजनेता देश के युवकों को गलत दिशा दिखाते हैं, परन्तु अपने बच्चों को विदेश में पढ़ने भेजते हैं। ये अच्छी तरह समझते हैं कि मुफ्त का चीजों के लालच में जनता उनको वोट दे ही देगी। ये कभी नहीं चाहेंगे कि लोग शिक्षित होकर अपने आप का वोट दे ही देगी ।

Last week Caroline went on her first deep sea fishing trip off the coast of Catalina Island. She had always enjoyed fishing when she was a child but had never gone fishing in the ocean. Her dad liked to fish very often. Her big brother Jack was never the outdoor type, so her dad took her out often. One of his favourite spots was Lake Isabella, which was about two hours from their home. She recalls how she and her dad would spend a long, leisurely day driving to the lake, and then taking his small boat out on the water. It was quiet and peaceful for the most part. Those memories remain some of her most cherished moments of her life. Caroline has a friend called Robert. On this day, Robert invited Caroline to join him on his company’s fishing trip. Robert said it wouldn’t cost much but would be a lot of fun. He knew Caroline enjoyed lake fishing and figured she would have a great time. “Okay”, said Caroline, and to the ocean they went.

The first thing Caroline noticed, however, was ! the motion. “Wow, this boat really rocks”, Caroline told Robert. “Don’t worry about it. You will get used to it”, he said. The trip to the waters off Catalina Island took about an hour. Caroline marvelled at how quickly she lost sight of the mainland. It was a bit scary when she thought about how alone they were in this great ocean. Soon, it was time to collect squid for bait. The small boat stopped in the water and the crew turned the bright light into the ocean to attract the squid. Before long, thousands of squid rose to the surface and were collected for bait. After about an hour, Caroline didn’t feel the rocking motion anymore. They were ready to fish. Caroline caught her first ocean trout. It was a beautiful day.
