Major Pond and Lakes of Uttarakhand
Many ponds and lakes of cold and hot water are found in the Uttarakhand state. Himani (Glacier) lakes are found in Uttarakhand. Tectonic lakes in India (Wular lake in Kashmir), Volcanic lakes (Lonar lake in Maharashtra), Colair lakes (Chilika Lake in Odisha, Kolleru in Andhra Pradesh), Airborne Lakes (Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan and Didwana Panchabhadra Lake), Himani (Glacier) Lakes (Lakes of Uttarakhand) type of lakes are found.

Bhimtal
- Length – 1675 m.
- Width – 470 m.
- Depth – 26 m.
It is the largest lake in the Kumaon region, its shape is triangular, its color is dark blue, there is an island in the middle of this lake, which also has an aquarium. Small canals have been drawn from this lake for irrigation. It is the largest pool in the Kumaon region.
Naukuchiatal

- Depth – 40m.
It is the deepest Lake of the Kumaon region, this lake is perfect for birds. This Tal with 9 corners.
Nainital
- Length – 1430 m.
- Width – 465 m.
- Depth – 16 – 26 m.
This lake is called ‘Tri-Rishi lake’ in Skandpuran, its height is 1,937 meters above sea level, there are seven high mountains around the lake, the highest of which is China Peak or Naina Peak. Its northern part is called Mallital and the southern part is called Tallital, Nainital was discovered in 1841 by C. P. Baron. It is also called Tri Rishi Sarovar. Due to the abundance of lakes, Nainital is also called the city of lakes.
Satatal

It is the most beautiful lake in the Kumaon region, there were 7 lakes earlier, many have been dried up at present, these include Nal Damayanti Tal, Garud or Panna Tal, Purna Tal, Laxman Tal and Ram-Sita Tal.
Khurpatal
- Length – 1633 m.
- Width – 500 m.
This Tal is situated on the Nainital and Kaladhungi route, is surrounded by hills on all three sides, its height is about 1635 meters above sea level, its color is dark green. Its shape is similar to the hoof of the animal. That is why it is called Khurpatal.
Drona Sagar
Situated 2 kilometers from Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar, Drona Guru taught archery to his disciples near this lake.
Giri Tal
This Lake is in Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar, here there are temples of Chamunda, Santoshimata, Nagnath and Mansa Devi.
Jhilmil Tal
It is located about 5 kilometers from Tanakpur in Champawat, the circumference of this lake is about 2 kilometers, whose shape is circular and the color of the water is blue.
Shyam Tal
Situated in Champawat district, the circumference of this lake is 2 kilometers, its color is dark black. Swami Vivekananda Ashram is situated on its banks, the Jhula Mela is famous here.
Tadang Tal
This Tal is located 10 kilometers from Chokhutia of Almora district, this lake is 1 kilometer long and half a kilometer wide, five tunnels have been made for the drainage of water from the lower part of this pool, out of which three tunnels are closed.

Sahastra Tal
Sahastra Tal is a cluster of several talas at an altitude of 1530 meters above sea level, in Tehri Garhwal. It is the largest and deepest lake of the Garhwal region. Garhwal is the largest and deepest lake in the region.
Yam Tal
Yama Tal is nearest to the Sahastra Tal of Tehri, which is always covered with snow.
Mahasara Tal
The lake, located in the Balganga Valley at some distance from Sahastra Tal, which is made up of two bowl-shaped locks. Both these lakes, also known as the brothers-sister lakes, are surrounded by dense trees and Bugyal “Grasslands” around this lake.
Basuki Tal
Basukital is located west of Kedarnath northeast of Tehri Garhwal. This is a unique pool with red water, It is situated at an altitude of 4150 meters above sea level, it is famous for the blue lotus pool.
Mansoor Tal
Tehri is situated right in front of Khatling Glacier near the border of Garhwal, This is the origin of the river Dudhganga. It is situated at an altitude of 16,500 feet, its circumference is 3 kilometers.
Roopkund
This lake is located in Bedni Bugyal of Tharali block in Chamoli district, From here, the hills of Trishuli and Nandaghughati are seen, a lot of male skeletons have been found around this pool.
Hemkund
The tenth Sikh Guru Govind Singh did penance on the banks of this lake located in Chamoli. This lake is the origin of the Lakshman Ganga, a tributary of the Alaknanda, the lake is surrounded by seven mountains.
Chorbari Tal ‘Gandhi Sarovar’
Located 1 kilometer from Kedarnath temple in Rudraprayag, Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were burnt here in 1948, hence it is also called Gandhi Sarovar.
Nachiketa Tal
Nachiketa Tal is located in a dense forest about 32 km from Uttarkashi district.
Fachchandi or Bayantal
Fachchandi or Bayatal is located in Uttarkashi district, the water of this lake keeps boiling.
