List of Uttarakhand Governors

Uttarakhand State Formation Since 09 November 2000 till now 7 governors have taken charge in the state. Surjit Singh Barnala was the first Governor of Uttarakhand. The current governor of Uttarakhand is Baby Rani Maurya.

The Governor of Uttarakhand is appointed by the President of India for a term of five years. All the executive functions of the state government are taken in the name of the governor. However, the Governor should act on the advice of the popularly elected cabinet of Uttarakhand by the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Which actually holds the executive authority at the state level. The governor is the representative of the central government and like the president at the center, the executive power in the states is vested in him.

Article 156(1) also provides that the Governor can continue in office as long as the President so desires. In this way the President can transfer the Governor from one state to another.

Mr. Surjit Singh Barnala

First Governor of Uttarakhand.
He took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand from 09 November 2000 to 07 January 2003.
He was the Governor of Andhra Pradesh from 03 January 2007 to 02 November 2011.
Died on 14 January 2017 in Chandigarh.

Mr. Sudarshan Agarwal

Second Governor of Uttarakhand.
He took over as the Governor of Uttarakhand from 8 January 2003 to 28 October 2007.

Mr. B.L. Joshi

Third Governor of Uttarakhand.
He took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand from 29 October 2007 to 05 August 2009.

Mrs. Margaret Alva

Fourth Governor of Uttarakhand.
First woman governor of Uttarakhand.
He took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand from 06 August 2009 to 14 May 2012.

Dr. Aziz Qureshi

Sixth Governor of Uttarakhand.
He took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand from 15 May 2012 to 07 January 2015.

Dr. Krishnakant Paul

Sixth Governor of Uttarakhand.
Before taking charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand, he also served as the Governor of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur for various terms.
He was the Governor of Uttarakhand from 07 January 2015 to August 2017.
President’s rule was imposed in Uttarakhand (27 March 2016 – 11 May 2016) for the first time during his tenure.

Baby Rani Maurya

She is the 7th governor of Uttarakhand and the second woman governor.
Baby Rani Maurya was a member of the National Commission for Women in 2002.
Earlier, Mrs. Margaret Alva was appointed as the first woman governor of Uttarakhand in 2009.
She took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand from 26 August 2018 to 08 September 2021.

Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh

He is the 8th governor of Uttarakhand.
He has been awarded with Four Presidential Awards and two commendations by Chief of Army Staff, during his nearly 40 years of service in the Army.
He took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand from 09 September 2021.
