The climate of any place depends on its geographical location, elevation above sea level, air pressure, and distribution of water and land. Climate is generally studied on the basis of seasons.
Due to the height of Uttarakhand, forest density, directions of mountain ranges, the Himalayan region from the sea level, there is a diversity in the climate of Uttarakhand state. The weather of Uttarakhand is tropical.
Climate Of Uttarakhand
The climate of Uttarakhand is studied in three parts –
- Summer season
- Rainy season
- Winter
1. Summer Season
- The summer season in Uttarakhand is called Rudi (रूड़ी) or Kharsau (खरसाऊ).
- The summer effect lasts from March to June.
- The summer Himalayan region has the lowest temperature during summer.
- The temperature of the Shivalik Region varies from 30 to 38 degrees centigrade.
- Temperatures in the southern plains range from about 43 to 44 degrees centigrade.
2. Rainy Season
- The Rainy season in Uttarakhand is called Basagyal (बसग्याल) or Chaumasa (चौमासा).
- The rainy season lasts from mid-June to October.
- There are two monsoons in the Uttarakhand rainy season –
- Southwest monsoon
- Bay of Bengal Monsoon
- Most of the rainfall in the state comes from the monsoon in the Bay of Bengal.
- Average annual rainfall in the state 150 – 200 cm.
- The lowest rainfall in the Great Himalayas varies from 40 to 80 cm.
- The central Himalayas receive less rainfall from 80 to 120 cm.
- The Southern slopes and River valleys of the Doon and Central Himalayas receive heavy rainfall ranging from 120 – 200 cm.
- Shivalik, Terai, Bhabar receive maximum rainfall of more than 200 cm.
- Narendra Nagar is the region with the highest rainfall, where 318 cm of rainfall has been recorded.
3. Winter Season
- The state experiences the winter season from October to March.
- The coldest month of the state is January.
- Winter is also known as Hyund (ह्यूंद) and Shitkala in the local language.
- In January, the temperature is the lowest.
- In January, snow starts at all places above 1500 meters of the state.
- Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri and Almora are the regions with the highest winter rainfall in the state.
- This rain is a Western disturbance that receives moisture from the Mediterranean Sea. And enters this region through Iran and Afghanistan. And about 12 to 12.5 cm. of rain. At this time, the temperature in the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand falls more while the plains are prone to fog.
