Chapter – 16 (Garbage in, Garbage out)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

1.
\n(a) Which kind of garbage is not converted into compost by the red worms?
\n<\/strong>(b) Have you seen any other organism besides red worms, in your pit? If yes, try to find out their names. Draw pictures of these.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –
\n<\/strong>(a) Garbage substances like broken glass, aluminium wrappers, plastic items, polythene bags, which are non-biodegradable cannot be converted into compost by the redworms.
\n(b) Yes, saprophytic organisms such as moulds and bacteria that help in decomposing biodegradable substances.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Discuss:
\n(a) Is garbage disposal the responsibility only of the government?<\/strong>
\n(b) Is it possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –<\/strong>
\n(a) No, not just the government, but everybody is responsible for garbage disposal. We should bifurcate wet and dry waste, recycle the non-biodegradable substances and we should also reduce the accumulation of garbage in our house and streets.
\n(b) Yes, it is possible to reduce the problems of garbage by scientific disposal of garbage, we can do it by bifurcation of different waste and also by recycling the waste materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. (a) What do you do with the leftover food at home?<\/strong>
\n(b) If you and your friends are given the choice of eating in a plastic plate or a banana leaf platter at a party, which one would you prefer and why?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –<\/strong>
\n(a) We give this food to animals and sometimes we throw it in the dustbin.
\n(b) We would prefer a banana leaf platter because it can be used to form compost.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. (a) Collect pieces of different kinds of paper. Find out which of these can be recycled.<\/strong>
\n(b) With the help of a lens look at the pieces of paper, you collected for the above question. Do you see any difference in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –
\n<\/strong>(a) Pieces of papers obtained from newspaper, notebooks, magazines, etc. can be recycled. Plastic coated and shiny papers cannot be recycled easily.
\n(b) The surface of recycled paper is rough whereas surface of new sheet of paper is smooth.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. (a) Collect different kinds of packaging material. What was the purpose for which each one was used? Discuss in groups.<\/strong>
\n(b) Give an example in which packaging could have been reduced?<\/strong>
\n(c) Write a story on how packaging increases the amount of garbage.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –
\n<\/strong>(a) Different kinds of packaging materials used commonly are:
\nCardboard \u2013<\/strong> used as shoe, soap, bulb and other boxes.
\nPlastic Bags \u2013<\/strong> Toys covers, sarees bags, shopping bags, etc.
\nWooden Boxes \u2013<\/strong> Fruit baskets and boxes for hardware.
\nJute Bags \u2013<\/strong> School bags, shopping bags, vegetable bags, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

(b) Packaging of toys, clothes, shoes, chocolates can be reduced..<\/span><\/p>\n

(c) Packaging increases the amount of garbage because after use we throw the packaging material. Most of the packaging material cannot be converted into compost etc. Hence we are increasing the amount of garbage.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilizers? Why?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
