Thinking About the Play<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. What does Chubukov at first suspect that Lomov has come for? Is he sincere when he later says \u2018And I\u2019ve always loved you, my angel, as if you were my own son\u201d? Find reasons for your answer from the play.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>At first Chubukov suspected that Lomov had come to borrow money as he was in his evening dress. He was not sincere when he told Lomov that he had always loved him and that he was like his own son, because he had decided to not give any money to Lomov. It was only when Lomov asked for his daughter\u2019s hand in marriage that his attitude changed and he rushed out to call his daughter, Natalya.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Chubukov says of Natalya: \u201c\u2026\u2026. as if she won\u2019t consent! She\u2019s in love; egad, she\u2019s like a lovesick cat\u2026\u2026\u201d Would you agree? Find reasons for your answer.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>Yes, Natalya is in love. This is clear by the way she behaves when she gets to know that Lomov came to propose to her. She starts weeping and asks her father to bring Lomov at once.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong>
\n(i)<\/strong> Find all the words and expressions in the play that the characters use to speak about each other, and the accusations and insults they hurl at each other. (For example, Lomov in the end calls Chubukov an intriguer; but earlier, Chubukov has himself called Lomov a \u201cmalicious, double faced intriguer.\u201d Again, Lomov begins by describing Nayalya as \u201c an excellent housekeeper, not bad-looking, well-educated.\u201d)<\/span>
\n(ii)<\/strong> Then think of five adjectives or adjectival expressions of your own to describe each character in the play.<\/span>
\n(iii)<\/strong> Can you now imagine what these characters will quarrel about next?<\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>The words and expressions that have been used to describe each other by various characters of the play are Chubukov: intriguer, grabber, old rat Natalya: a lovesick cat, an excellent housekeeper, not bad-looking\u2019 well-educated. Lomov: a good neighbour, impudent, pettifogger, malicious, double faced intriguer, rascal, blind hen, turnip ghost, a villian, scare crow, stuffed sausage, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n1.<\/strong> This play has been translated in English from the Russian original. Are there any expressions or ways of speaking that strike you as more \u2013 Russian than English? For example would an adult man be addressed by an older man as my darling or my treasure in an English play?<\/span>
\nAnswer –<\/strong> Expressions not used in contemporary English
\n<\/strong>1. \u201cmy darling\u201d, \u201cmy beauty\u201d, \u201cmy precious\u201d, \u201cmy angel\u201d, \u201cmy beloved\u201d (here, an older man is addressing an adult man)
\n2. \u201c\u2026and so on\u2026\u201d (here, it is used after a sentence in order to complete it)
\n3. \u201c\u2026and all that sort of thing.\u201d (not explaining what it is, just leaving it as it is)
