1. <\/span>Who does Lencho have complete faith in ? Which sentences in the story tell you this ?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>Lencho had complete faith in God. The sentences in the story that show this are as follows:<\/span>
\n(i)<\/b>\u00a0But in the hearts of all who lived in that solitary house in the middle of the valley, there was a single hope: help from God.<\/span>
\n(ii)<\/b>\u00a0All through the night, Lencho thought only of his one hope: the help of God, whose eyes, as he had been instructed, see everything, even what is deep in one\u2019s conscience.<\/span>
\n(iii)<\/b>\u00a0\u201cGod,\u201d he wrote, \u201cif you don\u2019t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year.\u201d<\/span>
\n(iv)<\/b>\u00a0He wrote \u2018To God\u2019 on the envelope, put the letter inside and, still troubled, went to town.<\/span>
\n(v)<\/b>\u00a0God could not have made a mistake, nor could he have denied Lencho what he had requested.<\/span>

2. <\/span>Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho ? Why does he sign the letter \u2018God\u2019 ?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>Lencho’s trust in God moved the postmaster to tears. He therefore made the decision to give Lencho some money in order to maintain Lencho’s faith in God. As a result, he solicited donations from his friends and co-workers and then inscribed “God” as his name on the note. The mailman thought it would be a good ruse to tell Lencho that God has sent him the money and that God has personally signed it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. <\/span>Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him ? Why \/Why not ?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>As Lencho had complete faith in God, so he did not try to find out the actual sender of money.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4. <\/span>Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money ? What is the irony in the situation ? (Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the opposite of what is expected.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>Lencho had all his doubts on people working in the post office. The irony of the situation is the finger pointing on those who had tried to help out Lencho. 6. <\/span>There are two kinds of conflicts in the story : between humans and nature, and between humans themselves. How are these conflicts illustrated ?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>These conflicts are illustrated in the form of hailstorm destroying Lencho\u2019s crop. So he thinks of God and writes a letter to Him for help. The other conflict is illustrated by Lencho. It is in his not believing in the post office officials\u2019 honesty. He thinks them \u2018crooks\u2019 and dishonest persons.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I. Look at the following sentence from the story :

\nThere are different names in different parts of the world for storms, depending on their nature. Can you match the names in the box with their descriptions below, and fill in the blanks ? You may use a dictionary to help you.

III.\u00a0Relative Clauses<\/strong><\/span>
\nLook at these sentences
\n(\u0430)<\/strong> All morning Lencho\u2014who knew his fields intimately\u2014looked at the sky.<\/span>
\n(b)<\/strong> The woman, who was preparing supper, replied, \u201cYes, God willing.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The italicised parts of the sentences give us more information about Lencho and the woman. We call them relative clauses<\/strong><\/em>. Notice that they begin with a relative pronoun<\/strong><\/em> who. Other common relative pronouns are whom, whose, and which.
\nThe relative clauses in (a) and (b) above are called non-defining<\/strong><\/em>, because we already know the identity of the person they describe. Lencho is a particular person, and there is a particular woman he speaks to. We don\u2019t need the information in the relative clause to pick these people out from a larger set.
\nA non-defining relative clause usually has a comma in front of it and a comma after it (some writers use a dash (\u2014) instead, as in the story). If the relative clause comes at the end, we just put a full stop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Join the sentences given below using who, whom, whose, which, as suggested.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. I often go to Mumbai. Mumbai is the commercial capital of India, (which)<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>I often go to Mumbai which is the commercial capital of India.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. My mother is going to host a TV show on cooking. She cooks very well, (who)<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>My mother who cooks very well is going to host a TV show on cooking.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. These sportspersons are going to meet the President. Their performance has been excellent, (whose)<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>These sportspersons whose performance has been excellent are going to meet the President.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Lencho prayed to God. His eyes see into our minds, (whose)<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>Lencho prayed to God whose eyes see into our minds.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. This man cheated me. I trusted him. (whom)
\n<\/strong>Sometimes the relative pronoun in a relative clause remains \u2018hidden\u2019. For example, look at the first sentence of the story :
\n(a)<\/strong> The house\u2014the only one in the entire valley\u2014sat on the crest of a low hill.<\/span><\/p>\n

We can rewrite this sentence as :
\n(b)<\/strong> The house\u2014which was the onjly one in the entire valley\u2014sat on the crest of a low hill.<\/span><\/p>\n

In (a), the relative pronoun \u2018which\u2019 land the verb \u2018was\u2019 are not present.
\nAnswer – <\/strong>This man whom I trusted cheated me.<\/span><\/p>\n

IV.\u00a0Using Negatives for Emphasis<\/strong><\/span>
\nWe know that sentences with words such as no, not or nothing show the absence of something, or contradict something. For example :
\n(\u0430)<\/strong> This year we will have no com. (Com will be absent.)
\n(b)<\/strong> The hail has left nothing. (Absence of a crop.)
\n(c)<\/strong> These aren\u2019t raindrops falling from the sky, they are new coins. (Contradicts the common idea of what the drops of water falling from the sky are.) <\/span><\/p>\n

But sometimes negative words are used just to emphasise an idea. Look at these sentences from the story:
\n(d)<\/strong> Lencho\u2026had done nothing else but see the sky towards the north-east. (He had done only this.)
\n(e)<\/strong> The man went out for no other reason than to have the pleasure of feeling the rain on his body. (He had only this reason.)
\n(f)<\/strong> Lencho showed not the slightest surprise on seeing the money. (He showed no surprise at all.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Now look back at example (c). Notice that the contradiction in fact serves to emphasise the value or usefulness of the rain to the farmer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Find sentences in the story with negative words, which express the following ideas emphatically.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. The trees lost all their leaves.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>Not a leaf remained on the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. The letter was addressed to God himself.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>It was nothing less than a letter to God.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. The postman saw this address for the first time in his career.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>Never in his career as a postman had he known that address.<\/span><\/p>\n

V. Metaphors<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The word \u2018metaphor9 comes from a Greek word meaning \u2018transfer\u2019. Metaphors compare two things or ideas : a quality or feature of one thing is transferred to another thing. Some common metaphors are<\/span><\/p>\n
