Which sentences in the story tell you this ?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Answer &#8211; <\/span><\/strong>Lencho had complete faith in God. Send me the rest, since I need it very much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho ? Why does he sign the letter \u2018God\u2019 ?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Answer &#8211; <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lencho&#8217;s trust in God moved the postmaster to tears. He therefore made the decision to give Lencho some money in order to maintain Lencho&#8217;s faith in God. As a result, he solicited donations from his friends and co-workers and then inscribed &#8220;God&#8221; as his name on the note. The mailman thought it would be a good ruse to tell Lencho that God has sent him the money and that God has personally signed it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him ? We call them <em><strong>relative clauses<\/strong><\/em>. Notice that they begin with a <em><strong>relative pronoun<\/strong><\/em> who. Other common relative pronouns are whom, whose, and which.<br \/>\nThe relative clauses in (a) and (b) above are called <em><strong>non-defining<\/strong><\/em>, because we already know the identity of the person they describe. Lencho is a particular person, and there is a particular woman he speaks to. We don\u2019t need the information in the relative clause to pick these people out from a larger set.<br \/>\nA non-defining relative clause usually has a comma in front of it and a comma after it (some writers use a dash (\u2014) instead, as in the story). Lencho prayed to God. This man cheated me. I trusted him. (whom)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Sometimes the relative pronoun in a relative clause remains \u2018hidden\u2019. For example, look at the first sentence of the story :<br \/>\n<strong>(a)<\/strong> The house\u2014the only one in the entire valley\u2014sat on the crest of a low hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">We can rewrite this sentence as :<br \/>\n<strong>(b)<\/strong> The house\u2014which was the onjly one in the entire valley\u2014sat on the crest of a low hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In (a), the relative pronoun \u2018which\u2019 land the verb \u2018was\u2019 are not present.<br \/>\n<strong>Answer &#8211; <\/strong>This man whom I trusted cheated me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>IV.\u00a0Using Negatives for Emphasis<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">We know that sentences with words such as no, not or nothing show the absence of something, or contradict something. For example :<br \/>\n<strong>(\u0430)<\/strong> This year we will have no com. (Com will be absent.)<br \/>\n<strong>(b)<\/strong> The hail has left nothing. (Absence of a crop.)<br \/>\n<strong>(c)<\/strong> These aren\u2019t raindrops falling from the sky, they are new coins. (Contradicts the common idea of what the drops of water falling from the sky are.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">But sometimes negative words are used just to emphasise an idea. Look at these sentences from the story:<br \/>\n<strong>(d)<\/strong> Lencho\u2026had done nothing else but see the sky towards the north-east. (He had done only this.)<br \/>\n<strong>(e)<\/strong> The man went out for no other reason than to have the pleasure of feeling the rain on his body. (He had only this reason.)<br \/>\n<strong>(f)<\/strong> Lencho showed not the slightest surprise on seeing the money. (He showed no surprise at all.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Now look back at example (c). Notice that the contradiction in fact serves to emphasise the value or usefulness of the rain to the farmer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Find sentences in the story with negative words, which express the following ideas emphatically.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>1. The trees lost all their leaves.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Answer &#8211; <\/strong>Not a leaf remained on the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>2.
