Poem – 5 (The Ball Poem)\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

What is the boy now, who has lost his ball,
\nWhat, what is he to do? I saw it go
\nMerrily bouncing, down the street, and then
\nMerrily over \u2014 there it is in the water!
\nNo use to say \u2018O there are other balls\u2019:
\nAn ultimate shaking grief fixes the boy
\nAs he stands rigid, trembling, staring down
\nAll his young days into the harbour where
\nHis ball went. I would not intrude on him;
\nA dime, another ball, is worthless. Now
\nHe senses first responsibility
\nIn a world of possessions. People will take
\nBalls, balls will be lost always, little boy.
\nAnd no one buys a ball back. Money is external.
\nHe is learning, well behind his desperate eyes,
\nThe epistemology of loss, how to stand up
\nKnowing what every man must one day know
\nAnd most know many days, how to stand up.

Thinking about the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Why does the poet say, \u201cI would not intrude on him\u201d? Why doesn\u2019t he offer him money to buy another ball?<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>The poet says, \u201cI would not intrude on him\u201d\u00a0because the boy is shaken by the loss of his ball. The poet emphasises this loss. This loss can\u2019t be compensated with any money or anything. So he doesn\u2019t give the boy money.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. \u201c \u2026. staring down All his young days into the harbour where His ball went\u2026. \u201d Do you think the boy has had the ball for a long time? Is it linked to the memories of days when he played with it?<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>Yes, the boy had it for a long time. It is seen in \u2018staring down\/All his young days\u2026\u2019 The boy\u2019s staring into the harbour shows one thing. It is that the ball had links to the memories of many days.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. What does \u201cin the world of possessions\u201d mean?<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>It means the world of materialism. In it one\u2019s possessions carry importance. It is also of consumerism.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Do you think the boy has lost anything earlier? Pick out the Words that suggest the answer.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>No, it seems that the boy had\u2019not lost anything earlier. The words that suggest so are \u2018He senses first responsibility in a world of possessions\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. What does the poet say the boy is learning from the loss of the ball? Try to explain this in your own words.<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/strong>The poet says that the boy is learning the nature of the loss. It is in the loss of the ball. Actually, the boy is shaken in the loss. Now he tries to understand its emotional implication.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Have you ever lost something you liked very much? Write a paragraph describing how you felt then, and saying whether \u2014 and how \u2014 you got over your loss.
\nAnswer –\u00a0<\/strong>Yes, I have lost many things during the past years. I loved my favourite shirt. I loved it very much. It had a very pleasing colour. It had been stitched as if for me only. Its cloth was very smooth and lovely. It looked very nice on my body. I lay worried for many days at this loss. It couldn\u2019t simply be out of my mind. I felt shaken. I tried to forget it. But I could not. Only after many months would I be able to forget it.<\/span><\/p>\n
