Poem – 4 (How to Tell Wild Animals)\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

If ever you should go by chance
\nTo jungles in the east;
\nAnd if there should to you advance
\nA large and tawny beast,
\nIf he roars at you as you\u2019re dyin\u2019
\nYou\u2019ll know it is the Asian Lion…<\/span><\/p>\n

Or if some time when roaming round,
\nA noble wild beast greets you,
\nWith black stripes on a yellow ground,
\nJust notice if he eats you.
\nThis simple rule may help you learn
\nThe Bengal Tiger to discern.<\/span><\/p>\n

If strolling forth, a beast you view,
\nWhose hide with spots is peppered,
\nAs soon as he has lept on you,
\nYou\u2019ll know it is the Leopard.
\n\u2019Twill do no good to roar with pain,
\nHe\u2019ll only lep and lep again. <\/span><\/p>\n

If when you\u2019re walking round your yard
\nYou meet a creature there,
\nWho hugs you very, very hard,
\nBe sure it is a Bear.
\nIf you have any doubts, I guess
\nHe\u2019ll give you just one more caress.

Though to distinguish beasts of prey
\nA novice might nonplus,
\nThe Crocodile you always may
\nTell from the Hyena thus:
\nHyenas come with merry smiles;

The true Chameleon is small,
\nA lizard sort of thing;
\nHe hasn\u2019t any ears at all,
\nAnd not a single wing.

Thinking about the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/span>Does \u2018Dyin\u2019 really rhyme with \u2018lion\u2019 ? Can you say it in such a way that it does?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>No, \u2018Dyin\u2019 does not rhyme with \u2018lion\u2019. If we change the pronunciation of lion by speaking it as \u2018lying\u2019 then it may rhyme with the word \u2018dyin\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. <\/span>How does the poet suggest that you identify the lion and the tiger? When can you do so according to him?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>A lion is a large and tawny beast. A Bengal Tiger has black stripes on its yellow coat. A lion roars when it falls upon its prey, while a tiger attacks silently. We can identify the two while roaming in the jungle.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. <\/span>Do you think the words \u2018lept\u2019 and \u2018lep\u2019 in the third stanza are spelt correctly? Why does the poet spell them like this?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>These words are not spelt correctly. The poet spells them on his own. He does so to create rhyming between them and an eating effect of the tiger.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4. <\/span>Do you know what a \u2018bearhug\u2019 is? It\u2019s a friendly and strong hug-such as bears are thought to give, as they attack you! Again, hyenas are thought to laugh and crocodiles to weep (\u2018crocodile tears\u2019) as they swallow their victims. Are there similar expressions and popular ideas about wild animals in your own language (s)?
\n<\/span>Answer – <\/span><\/strong>A ‘bearhug’ is the bear’s tight embrace. Hyenas never laugh. But their faces look like that. Crocodiles do not weep but tears come when they swallow their victims.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5. <\/span>Look at the line \u2018A novice might nonplus.\u201d How would you write this \u2018correctly\u2019? Why is the poet\u2019s \u2018incorrect\u2019 line better in the poem?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>It would be written like : \u2018A novice might be nonplussed. The poet\u2019s incorrect line is better because it rhymes with \u2018caress\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

6. <\/span>Can you find other examples of poets taking liberties with language, either in English or in your own language? Can you find examples of humorous poems in your own language (s)?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>Yes, many poets take such liberties to create proper rhyming. These are for example : Kirk is used for ‘church’ to rhyme With Work’. Ken is used for ‘see’ to rhyme with ‘pen’.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

7. <\/span>Much of the humour in the poem arisesfrom the way language is used. Although the ideas are funny as well. If there are particular lines in the poem that you especially like, share these lines with the class, speaking briefly about what it is about the ideas or the language that you like or find funny.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nAnswer – <\/span><\/strong>The way the poet has used language and ideas in the poem is indeed humourous. The lines from the poem that appears to be funny are \u201cA noble wild beast greets you\u201d. The idea that a wild beast is going to welcome you is quite funny. The language in the line, \u201cHe\u2019ll only lep and lep again\u201d is also very humorous. The concept of \u2018lep\u2019 from the word \u2018leopard\u2019 generates humour.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
