People and houses were swiftly washed away. A raging, deadly, brown sheet of water covered everything as far as the eye could see; only fractured cement houses still stood in a few places. Bloated animal carcasses and human corpses floated in every direction. All around, even huge old trees had fallen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2. How has Prashant, a teenager, been able to help the people of his village?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer &#8211; <\/strong>The cyclone in the village left many children orphaned. There were many destitute women. Prashant brought them together. He put up a polythene sheet shelter for them. Women were requested to look after the children. He organised a cricket match for the cricket loving people. The government started a movement to set up institutions for orphans and destitute women. But Prashant and his . group opposed the move. They insisted that orphans should be resettled in their own community itself. Prashant is a role model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3. How have the people of the community helped one another? What role do the women of Kalikuda play during these days?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Prashant mobilised everyone in the community so that they could help one another in the time of such a devastating disaster. He noticed that a large number of children had been orphaned so he brought them together and put up a polythene sheet shelter for them. Some women looked after them and the men secured food and materials for the shelter. Some volunteers cleaned the mess while others tended to each other\u2019s wounds and injuries. He persuaded the women to start working in the food for work programme started by an N.G.O and organized cricket matches for the children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4. Why do Prashant and other volunteers resist the plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows? What alternatives do they consider?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Prashant and the other volunteers resisted the plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows because they felt that in such institutions, children would grow up without love and the widows would suffer from stigma and loneliness. Prashant\u2019s group believed that orphans should be resettled in their community itself, possibly in new foster families made up of childless widows and children without adult care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>5. Do you think Prashant is a good leader? Do you think young people can get together to help people during natural calamities?<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Answer &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Yes, Prashant is a very good leader. Though he himself was too grief-stricken, he got a hold of himself and decided to step in as the leader of the village. He carried out his role effectively and helped the people of his village in every possible manner.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yes. Young people can definitely get together to help people during natural calamities and otherwise.
