On Killing a Tree<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It takes much time to kill a tree,
\nNot a simple jab of the knife
\nWill do it. It has grown
\nSlowly consuming the earth,
\nRising out of it, feeding
\nUpon its crust, absorbing
\nYears of sunlight, air, water,
\nAnd out of its leprous hide
\nSprouting leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

So hack and chop
\nBut this alone wont do it.
\nNot so much pain will do it.
\nThe bleeding bark will heal
\nAnd from close to the ground
\nWill rise curled green twigs,
\nMiniature boughs
\nWhich if unchecked will expand again
\nTo former size.<\/span><\/p>\n

No,
\nThe root is to be pulled out \u2014
\nOut of the anchoring earth;
\nIt is to be roped, tied,
\nAnd pulled out \u2014 snapped out<\/span>
\nOr pulled out entirely,
\nOut from the earth-cave,
\nAnd the strength of the tree exposed
\nThe source, white and wet,
\nThe most sensitive, hidden
\nFor years inside the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the matter<\/span>
\nOf scorching and choking
\nIn sun and air,
\nBrowning, hardening,
\nTwisting, withering,
\nAnd then it is done.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/span>Can a \u201csimple jab of the knife\u201d kill a tree? Why not?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>No, a simple jab of the knife cannot kill a tree because the tree grows with a lot of nutrients and resources. Even if one cuts it, it will sprout again.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2<\/span>. How has the tree grown to its full size? List the words suggestive of its life and activity.
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>The tree has grown to its full size by consuming the earth, feeding upon its crust, absorbing years of sunlight, air and water. The words suggestive of its life and activity are: absorbing, feeding, rising, consuming and sprouting.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3<\/span>. What is the meaning of \u201cbleeding bark\u201d? What makes it bleed?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> No, a simple jab of the knife cannot kill a tree. It is firmly held by the earth for so many years and . its roots are safe. The tree is too strong to be killed by a simple jab of the knife.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4<\/span>. The poet says \u201cNo\u201d in the beginning of the third stanza. What does he mean by this?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>The poet says \u201cNo\u201d in the beginning of the third stanza. It emphasizes that only cutting or chopping the tree will not cease its existence. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5. <\/span>What is the meaning of \u201canchoring earth\u201d and \u201cearth cave\u201d?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer – <\/strong><\/span><\/span>The \u201canchoring earth\u201d means that the earth works as an anchor to protect the tree and saves it from getting uprooted.
\n\u201cEarth cave\u201d implies the depth of the mother earth where the tree spreads its roots and gets nurtured.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

6. <\/span>What does he mean by \u201cthe strength of the tree exposed\u201d?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>He means to say that when one tries to pull out the tree along with its roots which are spread deep inside the earth, one will understand the strength of the tree.

7. <\/span>What finally kills the tree?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>When the tree is pulled out along with its roots and separated from mother earth, one has to subject it to the scorching sun and let it wither. This will finally kill the tree.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
