Away, away in the Northland,
\nWhere the hours of the day are few,
\nAnd the nights are so long in winter
\nThat they cannot sleep them through;<\/span><\/p>\n

Where they harness the swift reindeer
\nTo the sledges, when it snows;
\nAnd the children look like bear\u2019s cubs
\nIn their funny, furry clothes:<\/span><\/p>\n

They tell them a curious story \u2014
\nI don\u2019t believe \u2019tis true;
\nAnd yet you may learn a lesson
\nIf I tell the tale to you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once, when the good Saint Peter
\nLived in the world below,
\nAnd walked about it, preaching,
\n<\/span>Just as he did, you know,
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He came to the door of a cottage,
\nIn travelling round the earth,
\nWhere a little woman was making cakes,
\nAnd baking them on the hearth;
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And being faint with fasting,
\nFor the day was almost done,
\nHe asked her, from her store of cakes,
\nTo give him a single one.<\/span><\/p>\n

So she made a very little cake,
\nBut as it baking lay,
\nShe looked at it, and thought it seemed
\nToo large to give away.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore she kneaded another,
\nAnd still a smaller one;
\nBut it looked, when she turned it over,
\nAs large as the first had done.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then she took a tiny scrap of dough,
\nAnd rolled and rolled it flat;
\nAnd baked it thin as a wafer \u2014
\nBut she couldn\u2019t part with that.<\/span><\/p>\n

For she said, \u201cMy cakes that seem too small
\nWhen I eat of them myself
\nAre yet too large to give away.\u201d
\nSo she put them on the shelf.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then good Saint Peter grew angry,
\nFor he was hungry and faint;
\nAnd surely such a woman
\nWas enough to provoke a saint.<\/span><\/p>\n

And he said, \u201cYou are far too selfish
\nTo dwell in a human form,
\nTo have both food and shelter,
\nAnd fire to keep you warm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, you shall build as the birds do,
\nAnd shall get your scanty food
\nBy boring, and boring, and boring,
\nAll day in the hard, dry wood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Then up she went through the chimney,
\nNever speaking a word,
\nAnd out of the top flew a woodpecker,
\nFor she was changed to a bird.<\/span><\/p>\n

She had a scarlet cap on her head,
\nAnd that was left the same;
\nBut all the rest of her clothes were burned
\nBlack as a coal in the flame.<\/span><\/p>\n

And every country schoolboy
\nHas seen her in the wood,
\nWhere she lives in the trees till this very day,

Thinking about the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I. 1. <\/span>Which country or countries do you think \u201cthe Northland\u201d refers to?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>The \u201cNorthland\u201d may refer to any of the countries among Greenland, Norway, Russia, Canada, etc.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2<\/span>. What did Saint Peter ask the old lady for? What was the lady\u2019s reaction?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> Saint Peter asked the old lady for one of her baked cakes to satisfy his hunger. The lady tried to bake a small cake for the saint.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3<\/span>. How did he punish her?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>He cursed her and changed her into a woodpecker as a punishment for being so selfish.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4<\/span>. How does the woodpecker get her food?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> The woodpecker gets her food by boring holes into trees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> The poem is a story of an old woman. She is asked by Saint Peter for alms who has become weak because of fasting and travelling. But her greed forces her not to give him anything. He becomes angry and makes her a woodpecker who bores hard, dry wood to get food. Her clothes are burnt to ashes and she is left with a cap on her head. She continues boring into hard wood for her little food.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

II. 1.<\/strong> <\/span>Let\u2019s look at the words at the end of the second and fourth lines, viz., \u2018snows\u2019 and \u2018clothes\u2019, \u2018true\u2019 and \u2018you\u2019, \u2018below\u2019 and \u2018know.\u2019 We find that \u2018snows\u2019 rhymes with \u2018clothes\u2019, \u2018true\u2019 rhymes with \u2018you\u2019 and \u2018below\u2019 rhymes with \u2018know\u2019.
