Rain on the Roof<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

When the humid shadows hover
\nOver all the starry spheres
\nAnd the melancholy darkness
\nGently weeps in rainy tears,
\nWhat a bliss to press the pillow
\nOf a cottage-chamber bed
\nAnd lie listening to the patter
\nOf the soft rain overhead!<\/span><\/p>\n

Every tinkle on the shingles
\nHas an echo in the heart;
\nAnd a thousand dreamy fancies
\nInto busy being start,
\nAnd a thousand recollections
\nWeave their air-threads into woof,
\nAs I listen to the patter
\nOf the rain upon the roof.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now in memory comes my mother,
\nAs she used in years agone,
\nTo regard the darling dreamers
\nEre she left them till the dawn:
\nO! I feel her fond look on me
\nAs I list to this refrain
\nWhich is played upon the shingles
\nBy the patter of the rain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thinking about the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I. 1. <\/span><\/strong>What do the following phrases mean to you? Discuss in class.<\/strong>
\n(i)<\/strong> humid shadows
\n(ii)<\/strong> starry spheres
\n(iii)<\/strong> what a bliss
\n(iv)<\/strong> a thousand dreamy fancies into busy being start
\n(v)<\/strong> a thousand recollections weave their air-threads into woof
\n<\/span>Answer –
\n<\/span><\/strong>(i)<\/strong> \u201cHumid shadows\u201d refers to the dark clouds that produce rain.
\n<\/span><\/span>(ii)<\/strong> \u201cStarry spheres\u201d refers to the night sky abounding in stars.
\n<\/span><\/span>(iii)<\/strong> \u201cWhat a bliss\u201d refers to the happiness of the poet. When it rains the poet gets into his cottage and enjoys the patter of rain upon the roof.
\n<\/span><\/span>(iv)<\/strong> This refers to the various imaginary thoughts and fantasies that are aroused in the poet\u2019s mind.
\n<\/span><\/span>(v)<\/strong> This phrase means that numerous memories intermingle to form a beautiful picture that the poet recollects.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2<\/span>. What does the poet like to do when it rains?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> When it rains, the poet feels delighted to lie with his head pressed against the pillow of his cottage chamber bed and listen to the patter of the soft rain. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3<\/span>. What is the single major memory that comes to the poet? Who are the \u201cdarling dreamers\u201d he refers to?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> The single major memory that comes to the poet is that of his mother and her fond look. The \u201cdarling dreamers\u201d are the poet and his siblings in their childhood when they were lovingly put to sleep by their mother.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4<\/span>. Is the poet now a child? Is his mother still alive?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>No, the poet is now a grown up man. His mother is not alive anymore.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

II. 1. <\/span>When you were a young child, did your mother tuck you in, as the poet\u2019s did?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> <\/span>Yes, when I was a young child, my mother tucked me in. She would sing me lullabies and send me
\nto sleep.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. <\/span>Do you like rain? What do you do when it rains steadily or heavily as described in the poem?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –<\/strong> Yes, I like the rain. When it rains steadily I get into my house enjoy the weather with my family.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. <\/span>Does everybody have a cozy bed to lie in when it rains? Look around you and describe how different kinds of people or animals spend time, seek shelter etc. during rain.
\n<\/span>Answer –\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span>No, not everyone is fortunate enough to have a cozy bed to lie in when it rains. Poor people who do not have a shelter to protect themselves from the rain. They wander here and there to find a place where they can stand under the tin roofs or trees. People who were out of their homes try to rush back towards their homes as soon as possible. Animals try to find places to save themselves from getting wet during rain.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
