Thinking about the Text<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I.\u00a0Discuss in pairs and answer each question below in a short paragraph (30\u201340 words).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

1. \u201cThe sound was a familiar one.\u201d What sound did the doctor hear? What did he think it was? How many times did he hear it? (Find the places in the text.) When and why did the sounds stop?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer – <\/strong>The doctor lived in a room which was full of rats. He heard the sounds of the rats. There was a regular traffic of rats to and fro the beam. He heard the sound thrice. The sound stopped suddenly as rats had seen a snake.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. What two \u201cimportant\u201d and \u201cearth-shaking\u201d decisions did the doctor take while he was looking into the mirror?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer – \u00a0<\/strong>The doctor took two \u201cimportant\u201d and \u201cearth-shaking\u201d decisions while he was looking into the \u2018 mirror First, he decided to shave daily and grow a thin moustache. Second, always to keep an attractive smile on his face.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. \u201cI looked into the mirror and smiled,\u201d says the doctor. A little later he says, \u201cI forgot my danger and smiled feebly at myself.\u201d
\n<\/span>What is the doctor\u2019s opinion about himself when:
\n<\/span><\/strong>(i)<\/strong> he first smiles, and
\n(ii)<\/strong> he smiles again? In what way do his thoughts change in between, and why?
\n<\/span>Answer –
\n(i)<\/strong> When the doctor smiled first, he was thinking that his smile was very attractive.
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> When he smiled again, he was thinking that he was a poor and stupid doctor.
\nHis thoughts change after his encounter with the snake\u2014from being a proud doctor he moves on to accept his stupidity.<\/span><\/p>\n

II.\u00a0This story about a frightening incident is narrated in a humorous way. What makes it humorous? (Think of the contrasts it presents between dreams and reality. Some of them are listed below.)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

1. (i)<\/strong> The kind of person the doctor is (money, possessions)
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> The kind of person he wants to be (appearance, ambition)
\n<\/span>Answer –
\n<\/strong>(i) The doctor is a person whose earnings were meagre. His house was a small rented room. He only had 60 rupees, some shirts, dhotis and a black coat.
\n<\/span>(ii) He believes in making himself look handsome. He decides that he would shave daily and grow a thin moustache.<\/span><\/p>\n

2<\/strong>. (i)<\/strong> The person he wants to marry
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> The person he actually marries
\n<\/span>Answer –
\n(i)<\/strong> He wants to marry a fat woman doctor who had plenty of money.
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> He marries a thin reedy person with the gift of a sprinter.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong>\u00a0(i)<\/strong> His thoughts when he looks into the mirror
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> His thoughts when the snake is coiled around his arm
\n<\/span>Write short paragraphs on each of these to get your answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer – (i)<\/strong> His thoughts are full of joy and satisfaction. He decides to grow thin moustache and keep smiling always. He finds his smile attractive.
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> He turns to stone. He sets like stone image in the flesh. However, his mind is very active. He feels the great presence of creator. He decides to write the words \u2018O God\u2019 outside his little heart<\/span><\/p>\n

Thinking about Language<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I.\u00a0Here are some sentences from the text. Say which of them tell you that the author:<\/strong>
