When applied to a specific community or tribe, it implies that a particular class, caste or tribe is excluded from mainstream society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2. List two reasons why Adivasis are becoming increasingly marginalised.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer &#8211; <\/strong>Adivasis have been marginalised because:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They live on the margins of social, economic development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are poor, \u2018low\u2019 in social status.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are less educated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most of them live in remote areas and do not have access to towns\/cities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>3. Write one reason why you think the Constitution\u2019s safeguards to protect minority communities are very important.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer &#8211; <\/strong>The Constitution safeguards protect minority communities to protect India\u2019s cultural diversity and promote equality as well as justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>4. It includes issues of power, access to resources and also bears cultural and social dimensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>5. You are participating in a debate where you have to provide reasons to support the following statement: \u2018Muslims are a marginalised community\u2019. Using the data provided in this chapter, list two reasons that you would give.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer &#8211; <\/strong>Two reasons in support of the statement \u201cMuslims are a marginalized community\u201d:<br \/>\nFirstly, the Muslim community has not been able to gain from the country\u2019s socio-economic development as statistics on basic amenities, literacy rate and public employment show. 63.6% Muslims live in kutcha houses as compared to only 55.2% Hindus; the literacy rate amongst Muslims was the lowest at 59% in a 2001 survey.<br \/>\nSecondly, their customs are distinct from other religious communities, so much so that they are identified as separate from the \u201crest of us\u201d leading to unfair treatment and discrimination against Muslims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>6. Imagine that you are watching the Republic Day parade on TV with a friend and she remarks, \u201cLook at these tribal people. They look so exotic. And they seem to be dancing all the time\u201d. List three things that you would tell her about the lives of Adivasis in India.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer &#8211; <\/strong>The three things I would tell a friend about the Adivasis in India would be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2018Adivasis\u2019 is a term literally means \u2018orignal inhabitants\u2019. They lived and often continue to live in close association with forests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Adivasis are not a homogenous population. There are over 500 different Adivasis groups in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Adivasis have their own languages which have influenced \u2018mainstream\u2019languages like Bengali and Santhali, commonly spoken in urban areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>7. In the storyboard you read about how Helen hopes to make a movie on the Adivasi story.
