Poem – 8 (Meadow Surprises<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Meadows have surprises,
\nYou can find them if you look;
\nWalk softly through the velvet grass,
\nAnd listen by the brook.<\/span><\/p>\n

You may see a butterfly
\nRest upon a buttercup
\nAnd unfold its drinking straws
\nTo sip the nectar up.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

You may scare a rabbit
\nWho is sitting very still;
\nThough at first you may not see him,
\nWhen he hops you will.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

A dandelion whose fuzzy head
\nWas golden days ago
\nHas turned to airy parachutes
\nThat flutter when you blow. <\/span><\/p>\n

Explore the meadow houses,
\nThe burrows in the ground,
\nA nest beneath tall grasses,
\nThe ant\u2019s amazing mound.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Oh! Meadows have surprises
\nAnd many things to tell;

Working with the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Read the lines in which the following phrases occur. Then discuss with your partner the meaning of each phrase in its context.<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span>(i)<\/strong> velvet grass
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> drinking straws
\n<\/span>(iii)<\/strong> meadow houses
\n<\/span>(iv)<\/strong> amazing mound
\n<\/span>(v)<\/strong> fuzzy head
\n<\/span>Answer –<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(i)<\/strong> velvet grass<\/strong> indicates that the grass is as soft as velvet.
\n<\/span>(ii)<\/strong> drinking straws<\/strong> means the butterflies who drink the nectar from the flowers seem as if they are drinking it with straws.
\n<\/span>(iii)<\/strong> meadow houses<\/strong> refers to the houses of rabbit i.e. the burrows, of ants i.e. anthills and nests.
\n<\/span>(iv)<\/strong> amazing mound<\/strong> means the mounds created by the ants for dwelling.
\n<\/span>(v)<\/strong> fuzzy head<\/strong> indicates the flowers of the dandelion which now floats in the air when we blow it.<\/span><\/p>\n
