Poem – 5 (Trees)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Trees are for birds.
\nTrees are for children.
\nTrees are to make tree houses in.
\nTrees are to swing swings on.
\nTrees are for the wind to blow through.
\nTrees are to hide behind in \u2018Hide and Seek.\u2019
\nTrees are to have tea parties under.
\nTrees are for kites to get caught in.
\nTrees are to make cool shade in summer.
\nTrees are to make no shade in winter.
\nTrees are for apples to grow on, and pears;
\nTrees are to chop down and call, \u201c<\/span>TIMBER-R-R!<\/span>\u201d
\nTrees make mothers say,
\n\u201cWhat a lovely picture to paint!\u201d
\nTrees make fathers say,
\n\u201cWhat a lot of leaves to rake this fall !\u201d

Working with the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. What are the games or human activities which use trees, or in which trees also \u2018participate\u2019?
\n<\/span><\/strong> Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>The games in which trees also ‘participate’ are hide and seek, playing on swings, climbing on trees, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong>
\n(i) \u201cTrees are to make no shade in winter.\u201d What does this mean? (Contrast this line with the line immediately before it.)
\nAnswer – <\/strong>It means that there are also those trees that give no shade and so it\u2019s a pleasure to be with them during winter.<\/span><\/p>\n

(ii) \u201cTrees are for apples to grow on, or pears.\u201d Do you agree that one purpose of a tree is to have fruit on it? Or do you think this line is humorous?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer – <\/span><\/strong>Yes. It is indeed true that one important purpose of a tree is to have fruit on it. Thus this line is not humorous.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. With the help of your partner, try to rewrite some lines in the poem, or add new ones of your own as in the following examples.
\n<\/span><\/strong>Trees are for birds to build nests in.
\n<\/em><\/span>Trees are for people to sit under.
\n<\/em><\/span>Now try to compose a similar poem about water, or air.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>Air is for people to breathe in.
\n<\/span>Air is for kites to fly high in the sky.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
