Poem – 4 (Chivvy)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Grown-ups say things like:
\nSpeak up
\nDon\u2019t talk with your mouth full
\nDon\u2019t stare
\nDon\u2019t point
\nDon\u2019t pick your nose
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Sit up
\nSay please
\nLess noise
\nShut the door behind you
\nDon\u2019t drag your feet
\nHaven\u2019t you got a hankie ?
\nTake your hands out of
\nyour pockets <\/span><\/p>\n

Pull your socks up
\nStand up straight
\nSay thank you
\nDon\u2019t interrupt
\nNo one thinks you\u2019re funny
\nTake your elbows off the table
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Working with the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Discuss these questions in small groups before you answer them.
\n<\/span>(i)\u00a0When is a grown-up likely to say this?
\n<\/span>Don\u2019t talk with your mouth full.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>A grown-up is likely to say this when the child speaks loudly.<\/span><\/p>\n

(ii)\u00a0When are you likely to be told this?<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span>Say thank you.
\n<\/em><\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>When the child is given something, he is likely to be told \u201cSay thank you\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(iii)\u00a0When do you think an adult would say this?
\n<\/span><\/strong>No one thinks you are funny.
\n<\/em><\/span>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>An adult would say these words when the child is trying to catch attention.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0The last two lines of the poem are not prohibitions or instructions. What is the adult now asking the child to do? Do you think the poet is suggesting that this is unreasonable? Why?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>In these lines, the adult is asking the child to behave like an adult. The poet is rightly suggesting that this is most unreasonable. The truth is that the child is not allowed to make up his\/her own mind.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Why do you think grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem? Is it important that they teach children good manners, and how to behave in public?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>The grown-ups say such things with different intentions. Many a time, they are trying to teach children good manners. They tell him how to behave in public. They consider it their duty to do so. It is very important for them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0If you had to make some rules for grown-ups to follow, what would you say? Make at least five such rules. Arrange the lines as in a poem.
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>Rules for the grown ups :
\n(i)<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t talk to your child loudly.
\n(ii)<\/strong>\u00a0Listen to him when he says something.
\n(iii)<\/strong>\u00a0Take him with you whenever you go to a party.
\n(iv)<\/strong>\u00a0Ask him his preference about food.
\n(v)<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t disturb him during his favourite TV programme.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
