Poem – 3 (The Shed)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s a shed at the bottom of our garden
\nWith a spider\u2019s web hanging across the door,
\nThe hinges are rusty and creak in the wind.
\nWhen I\u2019m in bed I lie and I listen,
\nI\u2019ll open that door one day. <\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a dusty old window around at the side
\nWith three cracked panes of glass,
\nI often think there\u2019s someone staring at me
\nEach time that I pass,
\nI\u2019ll peep through that window one day.<\/span><\/p>\n

My brother says there\u2019s a ghost in the shed
\nWho hides under the rotten floorboards,
\nAnd if I ever dare to set foot inside
\nHe\u2019ll jump out and chop off my head,
\nBut I\u2019ll take a peek one day.<\/span><\/p>\n

I know that there isn\u2019t really a ghost,
\nMy brother tells lies to keep the shed for his den;
\nThere isn\u2019t anyone staring or making strange noises
\nAnd the spider has been gone from his web
\nsince I don\u2019t know when,
\nI\u2019ll go into that shed one day soon,<\/span><\/p>\n

But not just yet…

Working with the Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Answer the following questions:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(i)\u00a0Who is the speaker in the poem?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>The speaker of the poem is the poet.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(ii)\u00a0Is she\/he afraid or curious, or both?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>She\/he is both, afraid and curious.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(iii)\u00a0What is she\/he planning to do soon?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>She\/he is planning to look into the shed soon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(iv) \u201cBut not just yet\u2026\u201d suggests doubt, fear, hesitation, laziness or something else. Choose the word which seems right to you. Tell others why you chose it.
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>The phrase suggests hesitation. He hesitates to expose his brother. He wants to keep him away from the shed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Is there a room in your house or a house in your neighbourhood\/locality where you would rather not go alone, and never at night? If there is such a place and a story to go with it, let others hear all about it.
\n<\/span><\/strong>Answer –\u00a0<\/strong>Yes, there is a house in our locality. It is a very old house. Nobody lives there. It is believed that a ghost lives there. The ghost is believed to be the spirit of the owner who died at his young age. Sometimes during night people hear strange noises and lights coming from the house. Once I went inside the house during play. First I was very fearful, but after some time everything was normal. I don’t feel what the people say is true.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
