1. Answer the following questions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(i) What is precipitation?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Precipitation is the fall of moisture on the ground in the form of rainfall, snow, sleet and hailstones.<\/span><\/p>\n

(ii) What is the water cycle?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>The water cycle is the process by which water continually changes its form and circulates between oceans, atmosphere, and land.<\/span><\/p>\n

(iii) What are the factors affecting the height of the waves?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Winds, earthquakes, volcanic eruption, or underwater landslides are the factors affecting the height of the waves. The stronger the wind blows, the bigger the wave becomes.<\/span><\/p>\n

(iv) Which factors affect the movement of ocean water?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Temperature, winds, the gravitational pull of the sun, the earth, and the moon; warm and cold currents are the factors that affect the movement of ocean water.<\/span><\/p>\n

(v) What are tides and how are they caused?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Tides are the rhythmic rise and fall of ocean water that occurs twice in a day. The strong gravitational pull exerted by the sun and the moon on the earth\u2019s surface cause the tides.<\/span><\/p>\n

(vi) What are ocean currents?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Ocean currents are streams of water flowing constantly on the ocean surface in definite directions.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Give reasons.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(i) Ocean water is salty.
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Ocean water is salty because it contains a large amount of salt dissolved in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(ii) The quality of water is deteriorating.
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>The water quality is deteriorating because of human activities like –
\n<\/span>1. Deforestation
\n<\/span>2. Throwing garbage and other waste in water bodies
\n<\/span>3. Chemicals released from industries
\n<\/span>4. Increased use of fertilisers and pesticides<\/span><\/p>\n
