\n<\/strong><\/span>(i) Why do the plates move?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>The plates move due to endogenic forces acting in the interior of the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

(ii) What are exogenic and endogenic forces?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>The forces that act in the interior of the earth are called endogenic forces. The forces that act on the earth\u2019s surface are called exogenic forces.<\/span><\/p>\n

(iii) What is erosion?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Erosion is the wearing away of the landscape by different agents like water, wind, and ice.<\/span><\/p>\n

(iv) How are flood plains formed?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>During its course through a plain, a river sometimes overflows its banks. This leads to the flooding of the neighbouring areas. As it floods, the river water deposits layers of fine soil and sediments on its banks. This leads to the formation of a flat, fertile flood plain.<\/span><\/p>\n

(v) What are sand dunes?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>In deserts, when wind blows, it lifts and transports sand from one place to another. When it stops blowing, the sand particles fall and get deposited in low hill-like structures called sand dunes.<\/span><\/p>\n

(vi) How are beaches formed?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>The sea waves deposit sediments along the seashores. This results in the formation of beaches.<\/span><\/p>\n

(vii) What are the ox-bow lakes?
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>When the river enters the plains, it twists and turns forming large bends known as meanders. In due course of time, the meander loops start to cut off the river and form cut off lakes, known as the ox-bow lakes.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Give reasons.
\n<\/strong><\/span>(i) Some rocks have the shape of a mushroom.
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Some rocks have a shape of a mushroom because winds erode the lower section of the rock more than the upper part. Therefore, such rocks have a narrower base and wider top.<\/span><\/p>\n

(ii) Flood plains are very fertile.
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>Flood plains are formed by the deposition of fine soil and other material called sediments on the river banks. As the soil and sediments are brought by floodwater, they are very fertile.<\/span><\/p>\n

(iii) Sea caves are turned into stacks.
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>When the cavities in the sea caves become bigger and bigger, only the roof of the caves are leftover, which forms sea arches. Further, due to erosion, the roof vanishes and only the walls stay intact, turning the sea caves into stacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

(iv) Buildings collapse due to earthquakes.
\n<\/strong><\/span>Answer – <\/strong>When the lithospheric plates move, the surface of the earth vibrates and then these vibrations travel outwards from the epicentre in the form of waves, which leads to sudden movement and results in the collapse of buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n
