Last night, while I lay thinking here,
\nSome What ifs crawled inside my ear
\nAnd pranced and partied all night long
\nAnd sang their same old What if song:
\nWhat if I\u2019m dumb in school?
\nWhat if they\u2019ve closed the swimming-pool?
\nWhat if I get beat up?
\nWhat if there\u2019s poison in my cup?
\nWhat if I start to cry?
\nWhat if I get sick and die?
\nWhat if I flunk that test?
\nWhat if green hair grows on my chest?
\nWhat if nobody likes me?
\nWhat if a bolt of lightning strikes me?
\nWhat if I don\u2019t grow taller?
\nWhat if my head starts getting smaller?
\nWhat if the fish won\u2019t bite? <\/span>
\n What if the wind tears up my kite?
\nWhat if they start a war?
\nWhat if my parents get divorced?
\nWhat if the bus is late?
\nWhat if my teeth don\u2019t grow in straight?

Working With The Poem<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/strong>
\n(i) Who is the speaker in the poem?
\nAnswer –\u00a0<\/strong>The speaker in the poem is child.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(ii) With your partner list out the happenings the speaker is worried <\/strong>about.
\nAnswer –\u00a0<\/strong>Some of the happenings the speaker is worried about are being dumb at school; the swimming being closed; and about getting beaten up or being poisoned. He is also scared that he might start to cry; fall sick and die; or fail an examination. Some of his other worries are more amusing such as growing green hair on his chest and his head getting smaller.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(iii) Why do you think she\/he has these worries? Can you think <\/strong>of ways to get rid of such worries?
\nAnswer –\u00a0<\/strong>She\/he has these worries because in the night she\/he is free therefore, these fearful thoughts started coming in his mind. To get rid of such worries she\/he should involve their mind in creative work.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Read the following line.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some Whatifs <\/span>crawled inside my ear<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Can words crawl into your ear? This is an image. The poet is trying to make an image of what she\/he experiences. Now with your partner try and list out some more images from the poem.

Answer –
\n<\/strong>(i) Pranced and partied all night long<\/span>
\n(ii) Sang their same old whatif song<\/span>
\n(iii) Everything seems swell<\/span>

3. In groups of four discuss some more \u2018whatifs\u2019 that you experience in your day to day life and list them out.
