Chapter – 1 (Understanding Diversity)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

1. Draw up a list of the different festivals celebrated in your locality. Which of these celebrations are shared by members of different regional and religious communities?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer – <\/b>Different festivals which are celebrated in my locality are; Holi, Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Rath Yatra, Chhath, Guru Parb, etc. Holi and Diwali are Hindu festivals which are celebrated all over India. In my locality, my Muslim and Christian friends also participate in these festivals. Similarly, Hindus and Sikhs also participate in Christmas and Eid. I have seen most of my Hindu friends wearing the Santa Clause cap during Christmas. Chhath is mainly celebrated in Bihar and Eastern UP. But in my locality, most of the people throng the venue of Chhath Puja.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. What do you think living in India with its rich heritage of diversity adds to your life?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –\u00a0 <\/b>We learn different languages from our friends. We enrich our lives by getting to know the different cultural traditions. We learn from the different religious rituals that are observed by our friends and neighbours.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Do you think the term \u201cunity in diversity\u201d is an appropriate term to describe India? What do you think Nehru is trying to say about Indian unity in the sentence quoted above from his book The Discovery of India?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Yes, the term “unity in diversity” is an appropriate term to describe India. The diversity in India has always been recognised as a source of its strength. Even during freedom movements, women and men from different cultural, religious and regional backgrounds came together to decide joint actions and opposes the British rule. This strength of unity made it very hard for Britishers to continue the rule and Indians won the battle of independence. Also, the same national flag was used as means of protest against Britishers everywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his book The Discovery of India Jawaharlal Nehru says that Indian unity is not something imposed from the outside but rather it was something deeper and within its fold, the widest tolerance of belief and custom was practised and every variety acknowledged and even encouraged. This suggests that despite of having geographical, language and cultural differences, people of India are living with peace with respect for each others traditions and with unity.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Underline the line in the poem sung after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which according to you, reflects India\u2019s essential unity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer – <\/b>\u2018The blood of Hindus and Muslims flows together today\u2019<\/strong> is the line in the poem which reflects India\u2019s essential unity.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Choose another region in India and do a similar study of the historical and geographical factors that influence the diversity found there. Are these traditional and geographical factors connected to each other? How?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer –\u00a0 <\/b>Students are advised to compare their region with any other region in India and study the factors that influence diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n
